Faith Over Fear

I used to be afraid of a water heater. When I was a little girl, we had a water heater that was located in our unfinished basement. It was right beside the laundry chute and clothes would be all around it. I remember being fascinated by the orange and blue centered flame that I could see at the bottom of it; but once I became a mom years later, this quickly turned to fear that robbed me of my sleep. I knew it was irrational, the flame was covered, not to mention-my laundry room was located elsewhere. But every night before I would go to sleep, I would think about the water heater and would have to go check it a few times just to make sure nothing was around it that could start a fire.
This fear took effort to overcome. I remember I would sit in bed and tell myself, “Don’t go check the water heater, trust God instead.” It took everything inside of me not to go down and check it. For me that was my way of showing God that I trusted Him more. That was a sacrifice that I made, and he honored it.
We often hear the phrase Faith over Fear. We also know that some things are easier said than done, right? It’s easy to wear the t-shirt but it’s hard to actually let go of the fear. Faith takes action and sometimes taking an action seems impossible. I was able to overcome my fear, with Him. And by putting Him above my fear I realized, I really could trust the one who watches over me.
In you, Lord my God, I put my trust
Psalms 25:1
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalms 91:2
Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
Psalms 62:8
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
Side note: Refuge means a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble.
